Basement Waterproofing on Evans Avenue
Location: Evans Avenue
Municipality: Toronto, Ontario
Project type: Residential basement waterproofing and drainage improvements
Services: Waterproofing, sump pump installation and backwater valve installation
Aluneed LTD completed a residential basement waterproofing project on Evans Avenue to improve the property’s protection against water entering the basement.
The work combined waterproofing and drainage improvements with the installation of a sump pump and backwater valve. Each part of the system serves a different purpose, creating a more complete approach to managing groundwater, drainage, and sewer-backup concerns.
The Problem
The Evans Avenue property required improvements to its basement water-management system. Water around a foundation can enter through vulnerable areas, while excessive groundwater and sewer backups present separate concerns that require different solutions.
Instead of relying on a single device, the project addressed several areas of potential risk. The selected scope included waterproofing, drainage improvements, a sump pump, and a backwater valve.
Because every property has different soil, grading, foundation, and drainage conditions, Aluneed assesses the affected areas before recommending an appropriate repair plan.
What We Did on Evans Avenue
The Aluneed team completed the required waterproofing work and improved the property’s drainage system to help direct water away from vulnerable basement areas.
A sump pump system was installed to collect and discharge water entering the drainage system. This helps manage groundwater before it can accumulate around or beneath the basement floor.
A backwater valve was also installed in the building’s drainage line. The valve is designed to close if wastewater begins moving backwards through the sewer connection, helping reduce the possibility of sewer water entering the basement.
The project scope included:
- Assessing the basement and drainage conditions
- Identifying areas vulnerable to water infiltration
- Completing the required basement waterproofing work
- Improving the basement drainage system
- Installing a sump basin and pump
- Connecting the sump-pump discharge piping
- Installing an accessible backwater valve
- Checking the completed connections
- Cleaning and securing the work areas
Why Both Systems Were Used
A sump pump and a backwater valve are not interchangeable.
The sump pump helps manage groundwater collected by the property’s basement drainage system. When water reaches a set level inside the sump basin, the pump moves it to an appropriate discharge location.
The backwater valve serves a different purpose. It helps protect the property if water or sewage begins travelling backwards through the building’s sewer line.
Since the two devices address different water sources, some Toronto homes may benefit from having both as part of a broader waterproofing and drainage strategy.
The Result
The completed Evans Avenue project provided the property with an improved approach to basement water management.
The waterproofing and drainage work addressed vulnerable areas around the basement. The sump pump provided a method for removing collected groundwater, while the backwater valve added protection against reverse flow through the sewer connection.
No waterproofing product or drainage device can eliminate every possible source of basement flooding. Regular maintenance, proper grading, clear eavestroughs and downspouts, and periodic professional inspections remain important.
Signs Your Home May Need Waterproofing or Drainage Improvements
Homeowners should consider arranging an assessment if they notice:
- Water entering the basement after heavy rain
- Damp foundation walls or floors
- Musty basement odours
- Efflorescence or white staining on concrete
- Water collecting around the foundation
- Recurring floor-drain problems
- An older or frequently operating sump pump
- Previous sewer backups
- Foundation cracks or deteriorated wall surfaces
These signs do not always point to the same problem. A professional inspection can help identify the water source before repairs are recommended.
